About the position Kitsap 911 in Bremerton, WA is seeking a Public Safety Systems Technician. This agency offers continued learning opportunities and clear career advancement paths. Kitsap 911 is an award-winning emergency dispatch center. This position will be open through June 16, 2026 at 8 am. Systems Technicians possess an entry-level understanding of the technology used by Kitsap 911 in both radio and IT disciplines. The helpdesk is customer-facing and the first point of contact for support. Incumbents must have excellent customer service skills and the technical skills to support public safety users. They are required to troubleshoot, resolve issues, implement preventative measures, and escalate issues as needed. Detailed notes and documentation of resolutions are required. Incumbents must be highly motivated, work independently and as part of a team, adapt to competing priorities, and continuously learn to keep up with technological changes.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for Kitsap 911's Technology Help Desk for internal and external users.
  • Provide expedient assistance troubleshooting and resolving issues, or referring issues to the proper colleague or vendor for resolution and issue tracking via a work order system.
  • Configure software, troubleshoot networks, set up hardware and peripherals.
  • Maintain and configure land mobile radios.
  • Provide technical advice regarding the use of computers, software/hardware, radio software/hardware, and peripherals.
  • Assist with warehouse maintenance and organization, inventory control, general facilities maintenance, cable management, and grounds maintenance.
  • Assist with administration and maintenance of the Geographical Information Systems and Enhanced 911 Master Street Address Guide (MSAG) program.
  • Assist with or take responsibility for tasks, projects, assignments, or duties of higher-level jobs from both IT and Radio focuses to gain education, training, and preparation for higher-level responsibilities/jobs.
  • Make decisions about specific tasks and projects, and confer with supervision and/or senior technicians/engineers before making changes or taking a direction with implications beyond routine tasks or assignments.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED holder.
  • Two (2) years' practical work experience in either an operations or technical position involving one or more of the following: Troubleshooting and maintenance of workstations, Basic experience troubleshooting network connectivity issues, Basic knowledge of computer and/or radio hardware to troubleshoot effectively, Technical help desk.
  • Strong written communication skills: ability to author clear SOPs, technical guides, and knowledge base articles appropriate for a technical audience.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience or education that demonstrates the requisite background or potential for success in this class may be considered.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver's License.
  • Possess a ready and dependable means of transportation.
  • Possess a private telephone line with reliable 24-hour availability (can be a cellular phone).
  • Successfully pass each part of a multi-phase pre-employment examination, which includes medical/fitness and drug test examinations, as well as a criminal background check that includes a national fingerprint check through law enforcement.
  • Submit official transcripts from an accredited school or technical school, or proof of completion of specific training, education, or certification if education is being used as a qualifying equivalent, or if jobs require specific certification.
  • Reliably appear for scheduled work with regular, predictable and punctual attendance.
  • Type sufficiently to accurately operate equipment and technologies, prepare documents, spreadsheets and presentations using Microsoft Office and other software.
  • Be capable of performing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division without the use of a computer or calculator.
  • Use Microsoft Office software and advanced features and functions.
  • Consistently demonstrate initiative and good judgment.
  • Work calmly and effectively with frustrated users, while instilling confidence that solutions will be found and implemented quickly.
  • Skillfully build consensus and arrive at resolution among a diverse group of individuals.
  • Skillfully navigate training a diverse level of users with varying technical aptitude.
  • Skillfully navigate and support multiple simultaneous projects.

Nice-to-haves

  • High school graduation or GED AND completion of training at an accredited college or technical school with training in computers, radio, or electrical engineering.
  • Basic experience working in a helpdesk/customer support role for computers and/or land mobile radios.
  • Basic experience with helpdesk software and ticketing systems.
  • Basic knowledge of computer and/or radio hardware repair and components.
  • Experience providing technical support to a hybrid workforce and vendors.
  • Basic knowledge of Active Directory and Group Policies.
  • Basic knowledge of programming and/or scripting languages such as: Structured Query Language (SQL) specifically Microsoft SQL (MSSQL) and MYSQL, HTML, Powershell, VBS.
  • Basic experience with: Microsoft Windows workstation and server operating systems, Microsoft Office365 and Office Applications, TCP/IP based networking, Installing and updating software, Operation and maintenance of computer workstations, laptops, and related peripherals and associated software.
  • Basic experience with computer networking: Ethernet and Wireless IP Addressing, Subnetting, VLANs, and/or routing.
  • Troubleshooting connectivity issues in a multi-subnet network environment.
  • Basic experience installing land mobile radios and equipment for VHF/UHF/P25.
  • Basic experience operating a radio service monitor for testing and diagnosis of mobile, base stations, portables radios.
  • Basic experience with electrical system theory.
