Position Overview

The Control Systems Engineer Manager serves as the primary technical leader for automated control systems within a assigned fulfillment center. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with team leadership responsibilities, ensuring optimal performance of material handling equipment including conveyors, sortation systems, scanners, cameras, print-and-apply systems, and SCADA devices.

The ideal candidate possesses deep knowledge of industrial control systems, demonstrates strong leadership capabilities, and thrives in a dynamic operational environment. You will be responsible for troubleshooting complex issues, implementing process improvements, and developing your team members into top-tier technical professionals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership & Development: Direct and plan work activities for Control Systems Specialists and Leads to achieve North America Customer Fulfillment team objectives and goals. Mentor, coach, and guide Control Systems Technicians (CST) and Control Systems Leads (CSL) within your assigned building, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work intimately with Building Operations, Activities Engineering, FC Startup Group, Reverse Logistics teams, Operations Planning group, and Safety in supporting material handling equipment optimization and project execution. Build strong relationships with stakeholders across operations, engineering, and senior leadership.
  • Control Systems Expertise: Understand, maintain, and analyze material handling control systems, including PLC/PC controllers and industrial networks such as Ethernet, ControlNet, DeviceNet, Profibus, motor control systems, servo drives, variable frequency drives, and electrical distribution systems. Apply deep technical knowledge to diagnose and resolve complex issues.
  • Performance Monitoring & Analysis: Monitor material handling equipment metrics and partner with maintenance/operations teams to address system performance issues. Provide comprehensive analysis across all operations, identifying trends and implementing proactive maintenance strategies to minimize unplanned downtime.
  • Escalation Support: Serve as first-level escalation support for Control Systems Specialists and Leads, during and after business hours. Investigate issues both locally and remotely, troubleshooting all equipment or controls programming systems within the facility. Appropriately escalate time-sensitive situations to vendors or headquarters for support to restore equipment operation.
  • Failure Analysis & Process Improvement: Lead Failure Analysis and Incident Review processes, implementing process enhancements or retraining to avoid future occurrences. Apply subject matter expertise in material handling and electronic systems to maximize building utilization of equipment and systems.
  • System Assessments: Perform, utilize, and provide analysis through building System Assessments to assess material handling system performance. Identify optimization opportunities and develop actionable recommendations for leadership.
  • Technology Implementation: Partner with other Building Operations management, equipment vendors, and parts suppliers to design and coordinate new technology installations. Serve as the technical advisor for capital projects within the facility, providing engineering expertise from concept through implementation.
  • Knowledge Sharing: Utilize building network support resources for guidance and support, and provide mentorship to peers as needed. Contribute to the development of technical documentation, training materials, and best practices that can be shared across the network.
  • Communication & Reporting: Communicate technical issues and project timelines with building leadership, operations, and the maintenance team. Explain production impacts and provide clear, actionable recommendations. Help with capability assessments for Technical positions within building operations maintenance groups.
  • Flexibility & Adaptabilty: Handle flexible responsibilities which may come from management or other operations. Participate in conference calls and coordination with central teams to complete all responsibilities required. Be available for on-call support as needed to ensure operational continuity.

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field; OR equivalent industry experience with 2+ years of relevant professional experience in industrial control systems, automation, or related technical role.
  • Availability: Ability to work flexible schedules, shifts, and regions, including weekends, evenings, and holidays as required by business needs. Must be willing to work in a fast-paced fulfillment center environment.
  • Technical Foundation: Basic understanding of electrical theory, industrial control systems, and automated equipment operations. Familiarity with PLC programming concepts and industrial networking protocols.
  • Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead others in a technical role and collaborate effectively with all levels of management. Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Control Systems Experience: Experience identifying, maintaining, investigating, programming, and designing HMI and control network components. Proficiency with human-machine interface design and network architecture in industrial environments.
  • Motor Controls Expertise: Experience identifying, maintaining, investigating, and changing Motor Controls including motor starters, Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), DC drives, and standard electrical components. Strong understanding of motor control theory and application.
  • Industrial Electrical Knowledge: Hands-on experience with industrial electrical systems including 480V 3-phase, 110 VAC, and 24VDC systems. Ability to read, interpret, and create electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • SCADA & Monitoring Systems: Experience maintaining and utilizing SCADA systems and KPIs for performance monitoring. Knowledge of data acquisition methods and industrial monitoring best practices.
  • Programming Skills: Knowledge of programming platforms such as RSLogix5000 Studio, FT View, and other controls programming environments. Familiarity with multiple automation vendor platforms and programming languages.
  • Robotics Integration: Experience with Robotics work cells and their control systems. Understanding of robotic integration in material handling applications and automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS).
  • Continuous Improvement: Track record of implementing process improvements and driving operational excellence. Experience with root cause analysis and corrective action methodologies.
